Your new role

The Specialist Family Violence Counsellor position is located within the Family Violence Therapeutic Service and you will be responsible for providing counselling and group work to women and children who have experienced family violence, as well as consultation to local professionals who refer to the program.

You will be

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of a high-quality therapeutic service for families who have experienced family violence.
  • Carry a case load of counselling clients (women and children) within the local government area of Bayside Peninsula Area and Southern Melbourne Area.
  • Complete Multi Agency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) risk assessments and safety planning with all clients, ensuring assessments are kept up to date throughout their engagement in the program.
  • Manage risk and safety collaboratively with clients and other services, utilising the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme (FVISS) and the Child Information Scheme (CISS) accordingly as required.

Your skills and experience
  • Must be assessed to meet the mandatory minimum qualification requirement for specialist family violence roles in Victoria Mandatory minimum qualifications for specialist family violence response roles | vic.gov.au - https://www.vic.gov.au/mandatory-minimum-qualifications-specialist-family-violence-practitioners
    • Degree in Social Work or other qualification in family violence or related discipline that meets Australian Qualification Framework [AQF] Level 7 [bachelor, graduate certificate or masters degree];
    • or hold a diploma in a discipline related to family violence and be in the process of working towards a qualification that meets the MMQ;
    • or have at least 2 years relevant professional experience and be in the process working towards a qualification that meets the MMQ;
    • or have been working in a specialist family violence role prior to July 2011.
  • Current driver’s licence valid in Victoria
  • Demonstrated understanding of the gendered nature of family violence, and relevant theoretical frameworks that underpin family violence practice
  • Experience in therapeutic counselling to children, young people and adults affected by family violence
